A City-Centre Art Afternoon in Sheffield Before Graves Closes
What remains open at Graves Gallery in October 2026, how Millennium Gallery compares and how to plan around the closure.
Published

An art afternoon in Sheffield city centre needs a little care this October. Graves Gallery, above the Central Library on Surrey Street, has two exhibitions still open, but its collection displays have already closed following a heating failure. The gallery’s announced closure on Saturday 31 October 2026 makes this a time-limited opportunity to combine it with Millennium Gallery across the road.[3][5]
For plans made on 20 October, Millennium provides the broader choice of displays and exhibitions. You can build an afternoon around it alone, or give Graves priority if its remaining photography and Queer art exhibitions are what you most want to see.[3][4]
What You Can Still See at Graves Gallery
Lives in Focus: Photography in Sheffield’s Collection runs until 31 October. Its subject is photography’s ability to connect us with the world and one another. Choose this exhibition if you’d like to concentrate on photographs and the relationships they reveal, rather than attempt a broad survey of the city’s art.[3]
Also remaining open is Revolution, Revelation, Reinforcement: Queer Legacies in Sheffield’s Art Collection. It brings together artworks and objects from Sheffield’s collections to consider how Queer art speaks to contemporary lives. The two exhibitions offer distinct ways into the collection, with a particular medium leading one and a shared theme leading the other.[3]
Don’t arrive expecting the usual collection circuit. On the Border of My Peaceful Home, curated by Kedisha Coakley, is closed, alongside Portraiture and the Human Figure, Place and Identity and Colour, Form and Line. Sheffield Museums, the charity operating the galleries, identifies these closures explicitly. General descriptions of Graves’ paintings and sculpture should be read with those restrictions in mind.[3]
Millennium Gallery: Metalwork, Ruskin and Current Painting
At Millennium Gallery on Arundel Gate, Sheffield’s making history sits alongside art and design. Its Metalwork Collection includes cutlery, flatware and tableware, giving you a way to look closely at objects made for use. Try choosing one object and considering its shape, decoration and practical purpose before moving on.[4]
A different strand comes from John Ruskin, the artist and writer whose collection includes art, illustrated manuscripts and minerals. Millennium’s combination of changing exhibitions, metalwork and Ruskin material is a longstanding part of its offer. You could make the collections the main event and leave yourself time for just one temporary exhibition.[1][4]
For painting and drawing, Good Morning: A Day in Art by Chantal Joffe & Ishbel Myerscough runs from 15 October 2026 to 17 January 2027. The artists’ own work appears alongside more than 80 works from Sheffield’s collection, arranged around the unfolding of a day. That gives visitors interested in the city’s art collection another substantial option while access at Graves is restricted.[2]
If printmaking interests you more, New Editions: Contemporary Printmaking runs until 24 December 2026. Artists James Green and Ed Bradbury, also known as Kid Acne, have curated work by around 60 printmakers from across the country. Pick the exhibition that most interests you and allow the other displays to be optional.[2]
Opening Hours That Determine Your Afternoon
These are the galleries’ published arrangements as of 20 October 2026. Both list free entry and request a £5 donation. Graves’ hours below apply before its announced closure, with a later opening on two dates this week.[3][4]
| Visit Detail | Graves Gallery | Millennium Gallery |
|---|---|---|
| Address | Above Central Library, Surrey Street, S1 1XZ | Arundel Gate, S1 2PP |
| Tuesday to Saturday | 11am to 4pm | 10am to 5pm |

| Sunday | Closed | 11am to 4pm |
| Monday, including bank holidays | Closed | Closed |
On a Tuesday to Saturday visit, we’d put Graves first because it closes an hour earlier. For 21 or 22 October, make that an afternoon arrival after 1.30pm. If Sunday is your available day, build the visit around Millennium. Its café, Ambulo, offers a possible pause within the gallery, although the gallery opening hours shouldn’t be taken as a separate café timetable.[3][4]
Graves’ Announced Move Is Still Ahead
Sheffield Museums’ September announcement says Graves will move to an interim home in the Heart of the City in 2027. It explains that the existing gallery heating system cannot be repaired. The collection was unharmed, and the Central Library and Library Theatre are to remain open on the building’s lower floors, where alternative heating is available.[5]
The interim gallery is a future plan, with its precise location and opening date still to be announced in that notice. For a visit from the announced 31 October closure onwards, plan around Millennium’s programme and check Sheffield Museums’ current visitor information before setting out for Graves.[4][5]
